Innovative precision machining for customer

Having recently toured our premises, and after seeing some of our sample parts, one of our customers was taken by the idea of a clear acrylic component. This would allow them to view the process that was happening inside their assembly and enable them to ensure all was working as desired. The customer would then be able to use this part to demonstrate to their customer exactly how the product worked. Our visiting customer consequently asked us to machine part of an oil pump in clear acrylic so they could ensure they were achieving the maximum efficiency of flow pattern. This would then be an invaluable sales aid.

If you would like more information as to how our innovations could benefit you, then please do not hesitate to contact one of our technical sales team.

Ultra’s ingenuity overcomes workholding problem

We were recently asked to machine a part for a customer which was a long Aluminium cone, with four deep slots milled along the whole length.

We opted to produce this on one of our CNC Turning / CNC milling centres. The original idea was to pick off the part holding on the cone using extended jaws. We had our concern with this method, which proved to be founded, when the jaws ‘spitted’ the part out as the taper on the cone proved too steep.

Our head engineer then resorted to his plan B, which was to use wrap around jaws, and mill within these four teeth with clearance to allow it to pick off the part holding onto the bottom of the slots. This proved to be very successful and the part was produced.

Government Investment in Engineering Projects

With our reliance on technology and science ever increasing it is always encouraging to hear about government investments. Two large scale investments were announced last week, one which will create the largest telescope facility in the world, with receivers across Africa and Australia. This £100 million investment could impact us here in the UK with faster smart phones and increased internet speeds.

David Cameron talks about Engineering Careers

In a recent issue of Engineering Careers Magazine David Cameron gave an interesting interview about the future of engineering and young people. He is backing an initiative that will hopefully ensure that there will be sufficient new technicians for the future to cope with demand. David Cameron also continued to say that whilst schools are not to blame, apprenticeships and vocational study are not promoted strongly enough. Young people are not aware of the spectrum of options available to them and he wants businesses to become more involved.

Here at Ultra Precision we are actively trying to encourage this, whether it be by employing apprentices or having visits from local schools to get some early enthusiasm for a career in engineering.
