Manufacturing back in the UK
UK design and manufacture is something which has been becoming less and less commonplace. A recent article in Eureka magazine charts the success of an innovative company reintroducing the design and manufacture of washing machines in Britain. Ebac had traditionally made dehumidifiers and water coolers but they were able to identify two niche areas that they felt needed exploring in the world of washing machines. Eureka's article explores this in depth. Hopefully many other companies will follow suit and we will see a resurgence of British manufacture.

Recent Machining Stories
We were recently asked to machine two parts for different customers.
The blue anodised parts pictured were machined from Aluminium 6082 on a Puma 1800 TT SY. This twin turret twin spindle machine with driven tooling turned the longer spigot and bores from a round bar. The shorter spigot was then interpolated using milling cutters and the thread was milled on. The success of this part has already led to a repeat order.
The silver anodised parts, also from aluminium were taken on at short notice for one of our customers for a leading supermarket. These 'good looking' parts were machined on a high speed milling machine.

Ultra makes Vulcan aircraft part into wedding ring!
A few weeks ago we were approached by Mark with an interesting and intriguing request. He had received from the Vulcan trust a piece of a decommissioned aircraft. He had selected a part that he wanted to be made into a weddng ring as these aircraft had a strong sentimental meaning.
Following the manufacture of this, the Vulcan trust asked him if the ring could be flown in the plane. The rings flew to Goodwood via Eastbourne and Beachy Head and Mark has kindly sent us the photos. The first photo shows the finished ring and the ring that we used to gauge the size of the inside diameter. The second photo shows the part which the ring was made from. The four subsequent photos show the ring on board the Vulcan along with Mark's fiancé's ring.

New Engineering Show on the Discovery Channel
Friday nights at 8pm presents an interesting new show on the Discovery Channel. Entitled "Incredible Engineering Blunders: Fixed" it features strange 'engineering phenomena'. Featured recently in Eureka Magazine, this program looks at crazy engineering around the world, including the remnants of a collapsed ski jump complex, some unfathomable crossroads where a road and runway collide and some incredible civil and construction engineering challenges.
